The Serengeti National Park is one of Africa's most iconic safari destinations, offering year-round wildlife viewing opportunities. However, the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.
The Great Migration (June - October)
The most famous spectacle in the Serengeti is the Great Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras move through the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. The dramatic river crossings at the Mara River typically occur between July and October, offering some of the most thrilling wildlife viewing on Earth.
Calving Season (January - March)
If you want to witness the miracle of birth, visit during the calving season. Around 8,000 wildebeest calves are born daily during this period in the southern Serengeti. This abundance of young animals also attracts predators, making it an excellent time for witnessing hunting action.
Green Season (November - May)
The 'green season' offers lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and lower prices. While some roads may be challenging, the scenery is spectacular and bird watching is at its best with migratory species present.
Dry Season (June - October)
The dry season offers excellent game viewing as animals congregate around water sources. Vegetation is thinner, making wildlife easier to spot. This is peak tourist season, so book well in advance.
Our Recommendation
For first-time visitors, we recommend July to October for the best overall experience. You'll have a good chance of witnessing river crossings, excellent weather, and abundant wildlife throughout the park.
